We are all excited about homecoming. The students have been dressed up all week and it’s been so much fun! Be sure to check out my website for picture updates!
For art on Monday, we made squirrels sitting in their nests. They turned out very cute!
Groton Elementary is participating in Kids Voting this year! We will be talking about the importance of voting and doing a mini lesson each week on citizenship and the election process. For our first lesson we voted on Pizza or Tacos. Pizza won by 5 votes. On Tuesday, we learned about Johnny Appleseed and then tried three different kinds of apples (Braeburn, Granny Smith, & Red Delicious). Braeburn won by a narrow margin! Watch for more information about Kids Voting!

Don’t forget the parade is at 1 p.m. on Friday. Students should wear red shirts and jeans for our Red Hots theme. If you are picking your child up that day, you can do so at the end of the parade route (near the park). See you there!

This week is homecoming week! Don’t forget to dress up all week-especially Friday for the parade! Here are the days:
Monday-Twin Day; Tuesday-Pajama Day; Wednesday-Crazy Hair/Mismatched; Thursday-70s; Friday-Red shirt/jeans for the parade!
Friday we will also be having a tailgate lunch on the playground. Your child can bring their favorite drink to enjoy with our meal! The parade is at 1 p.m. We hope to see everyone there! After the parade there will be games and inflatables near the football field. The football game is at 7 p.m. Go Tigers!
Tomorrow (Monday) I will be sending home a book with each student. Please have your child read the book to you. Then, circle (or highlight) all the words with the short i sound. Also starting this week, if homework is not completed and signed, students will stay in at recess time to complete it with a teacher.
Have a great week!
I appreciate seeing so many parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, siblings, etc. at our Open House. The students were so proud to show off their classroom, desks, and school! We watched the video one last time today! The students asked all day and so after a day of hard work and good behavior, we watched it! Many parents have contacted me about getting copies of it. I am not going to put it on my website since it uses names. However, if you want me to email it to you, let me know! You will need to have a lot of space for it to work!
Again, thanks for coming!
Open House will be Tuesday (Sept. 16th) from 6-7:15 p.m. Please join us! Feel free to bring grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, etc. Everyone is welcome! Your child will be leading you on a scavenger hunt through our classroom and other parts of the school we visit. You can come and go at any time during the Open House. Our goal is to have 100% of the First Grade parents attend our Open House.
I have also created a PhotoStory with all of the pictures we have taken so far. It is set to music and will be shown on the SmartBoard at Open House. The students are excited to star in their very own movie!
See you there!
Here are the photos from our trip to Sun Dial Manor in Bristol!
We had a blast visiting Sun Dial Manor in Bristol. The residents enjoyed the songs and Reader’s Theater (Yellow Butter) we performed! I unfortunately forgot to take the Grandparents Day cards we made, but a teacher from Bristol was going to drop them off today after school! Watch for pictures in the newsletter and I’ll post them on this blog and my website tomorrow evening.
Don’t forget to complete 10 minutes of reading EACH night with your student. Today the students had a book in their Go Home folders (blue). Please read it with your child~the book coincides with what we are studying at school. Please do only ONE math problem per evening. Don’t forget to sign BOTH homework sheets.
Please remember to empty the Go Home folders EVERY day. Sometimes there are important notes and information in the folders. Remove any papers from the folder so it is empty and ready for school the next day.
We are looking forward to a great week! We will be reading Sam and the Bag in our basal readers, learning about seasons in Science, and discovering patterns in Math.
~Ms. Imrie
On Monday we are going to be traveling to Bristol to visit the nursing home in honor of Grandparents’ Day! We are going to be singing a song, performing some quick rhymes, and handing out cards made by the students to the the residents. It will be a wonderful learning experience. Be sure to read over the lyrics every evening with your student. It will help with our performance! Ms. Imrie’s class will also be performing Yellow Butter. Ask your child to say his/her part! We practiced today and they all did awesome!

Tomorrow is also Fruit/Veggie Day. Students are encouraged to bring a fruit or veggie to enjoy at 2 p.m. It is a good way to end a great week!
I appreciate all the wonderful comments I have been receiving from parents, colleagues, and students about this blog, the pictures, and my website! It makes all the work I have put into it well worthwhile!

Today we read the story The Hat by Holly Keller in our basal reader. We had a blast using our very own hat (just like Pam’s) to act out the story.
We had a very productive day today in Ms. Imrie’s class! We studied the short a sound in Reading, practiced our addition facts in Math, and learned about community workers in Social Studies. Many parents have interesting careers that are important to our community!
Please fill out the yellow information sheet about your job with your child this evening and return it tomorrow. The students are very curious about what people do at work. Tonight starts the first evening of homework. Be sure to return it tomorrow in the blue go home folder. Don’t forget to sign the homework! Give me a call if problems arise! I am still missing some of the first day information from a few students. If you haven’t sent them, please do so by TOMORROW! Remember to empty the blue go home folders every evening with your student!!
Thanks for all the snacks. We have a healthy supply now! We’ll let you know when we need more.
Many of the students have been telling me all about their visits to my website. I’m so pleased that you are allowing your students to practice some of the skills! It’s also so great to hear so many parents actively involved in what’s going on at school!
~Ms. Imrie
