What’s happening in Ms. Imrie’s class?!?

Our Veterans Day program will be Tuesday. Veterans will be having breakfast at the elementary school at 7:30 a.m. The program will be at 2:30 p.m. at the high school. Join us if you can! We will be leading the audience in the pledge and then singing a song.

Students should wear a RED shirt for our program!

On Tuesday we will also be holding the CHIP program in the gym. It is a wonderful service that is provided free to all students. You will be receiving a CD of all the data we gather during the day!

Conferences for our class will start tomorrow (Monday) afternoon. The remainder of the conferences will be Thursday afternoon and evening. Be sure to double check your time!! If it doesn’t work for you, let the office know so they can reschedule. Conferences is a great time to ask any questions you might have regarding your child’s progress in first grade. I look forward to meeting with each of you!

It is amazing how time flies when we all stay so busy! It’s time to pack away the pumpkins and get out the Thanksgiving gear! November snuck right up on us!

Tomorrow is Election Day! How exciting for the students and for our country! By tomorrow we’ll have a new president. We have learned a lot about elections in first grade, but be sure to talk to your student about how you will be voting tomorrow. The polls will be open 9-11 a.m. tomorrow for the students. A great BIG thanks to the parent volunteers who are coming to help!!

Be sure to practice the High Frequency words with your child until he or she knows them by sight. They are important to improve reading fluency and comprehension.

This quarter we have begun weekly spelling assessments. The lists will be 10 words–6 from the skill we study that week–2 review words from the previous week–and 2 high frequency words. We do word work daily with the words so most students will do well on the Friday assessments without practicing too much at home. The lists are published on a cool website:

www.spellingcity.com

The site has lots of neat games to play with the current list. To find the lists, type in my last name (Imrie) in the search box and then locate this week’s date. This week it is the -ng diphthong as in king, sing, hang.

Have a great week!

We will be going to the Nursing Home tomorrow with Mrs. Harder to sing Halloween songs. The residents enjoy our visits!

If you are able to help on Election Day, please let me know. Thanks to the volunteers that have already agreed to help. Our school will be voting Nov. 4th from 9-11. We will need helping at the voting booths at that time and afterwards to tally the votes. Email me if you can help!

Have a great day!

Report cards will be sent home on Thursday this week. It will be in an envelope that a parent needs to sign and return. We will reuse the envelope for all report cards. If you have questions about your child’s report card, please let me know! Conferences will be Nov. 13th and 14th–watch for more information.

We will also be attending the acrobat show on Thursday! It looks very exciting and it will be a great experience outside the classroom!

The election will be our topic this week since in just a few days we will be voting a new president into office! Take the time to talk to your child about your political views and who you are going to be casting your vote for on Nov. 4th. Don’t forget to vote!

Below is the link for the new High Frequency Words. The assessment will not be for several weeks, but it’s not too early to start memorizing the words! We will practice them daily at school.

Have a great week!

This week is bat week! We will learn all about bats and do many activities surrounding bats!

Be sure to check out my website for pictures of spider week. It was a very interesting week–the live spiders were a big hit and some students even brought live spiders of their own. I love when the students take an active interest in “helping” me and the things we learn about.

We had our first high frequency words assessment last week. We will be doing retakes for the students that need them this Friday. I will be sending a copy of the test home on Monday. If your student missed 5 or more they will do the retake and I will average the two scores together as the final grade on the words. We will practice with the students who need it at school every day. Be sure to practice at home! It is important that students know these words by “sight”. Word attack skills generally will not help with these words. They are “oddities”. Some of them appear so much in our language, that knowing them by sight makes reading more fluent. Here is the links to the words:

Thanks for your support at home!! If you have questions, please let me know!

The following link will direct you to the list of high frequency words we have been studying. Your student should know them automatically (within 3 seconds). Please look over the list with your student. We will be having a quiz over the words later this week and early next week.

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! I’m sure the students needed it as much as I did!

This week is spider week! We will be studying spiders all week long. I even captured some spiders from my Grandpa’s house while I was there cleaning. He lives in Lily–anyone know where that’s at?? My son and I have enjoyed watching the spiders make webs and eat flies!

Our snack cupboard is getting low–sends snacks if you can!

Be sure to check out my website for pictures of our Columbus Day celebration!

We are participating in a postcard exchange! We will be receiving postcards from all 50 states. That means we will be sending out 50 postcards-one to each state. We need your help! PLEASE send one (or more) postcards that represent South Dakota. You can purchase them at most gas stations, Wal-mart, Kmart, etc. for about a dollar or two. Each postcard we receive and send out has information about the state. It’s going to be a great learning experience, but we need your help!! :)

Please send shoeboxes, too! We need them for an October art project. So far, I have received only 5!

Starting October 1st, I will be at the high school for debate practice every day after school. If you need to reach me, please call the high school at 397-8318. It’s a busy time for me and I spend many late evenings/nights at school. If you can help with clerical duties (book orders, bulletin boards, copying, etc.) I would certainly appreciate it–even a couple of hours a month would help! We have a parent that comes every Wednesday to help and I’m sure she’d be willing to show you the ropes. Plus, your child would LOVE to have you help out at school!

Thank you so much for all your support! Our classroom is so lucky to have such attentive, understanding parents. You’ll never know how much the students and I appreciate all that you do!

We had a great homecoming week! It was awesome to see all the students dressed up for our special days. We thought we looked great for the parade. Even though it was HOT, we had a blast!

It’s hard to believe that next week is already midterm time! Watch for reports to come home on Friday. Let me know if you have questions.

Friday is also Picture Day! Be sure to send back your picture envelopes.

We had a special guest reader on Thursday-a student’s Grandma. If you (or someone you know) would like to read to the first graders, please let me know. We’d love to have you!
